AAUW – Gaylord Area Branch

Join Us on March 7 to Celebrate the 2020 Woman Making History: Janice Lampert

Join us to celebrate AAUW Gaylord Area Branch’s 2020 “Woman Making History” on Saturday, March 7 at noon at the Otsego Resort.  Tickets are $25 per person and available at Saturn Books and Oliver Chiropractic. Tickets must be purchased in advance by March 4.

Thirty-five years ago, Janice and Scott Lampert landed in Gaylord, and Janice has continually
promoted, enriched and supported her hometown.  With insight and kindness, Janice has
creatively connected people and organizations.  After working for several years as the Creative
Director of the developing Gaylord Area Tourism Bureau, Janice’s initial volunteering efforts
were sparked by her 3 children’s school experiences. From religious education teacher, to the
P.T.O., to dedicated sport mom, Janice was involved. She served on the GCS School improvement Team, helped found the GIS Adopt-A-Class, and coached the Girls’ Varsity Swim
Team. Janice has served on the OMH Ethics Committee, the Recycle Otsego County Committee, and the Airport Advisory Committee. She is an Alpenfest Black Jacket. She has held leadership positions on the Library, Sportsplex, Otsego Community Foundation and GACA Boards. With the renovation of the historic El Rancho Stevens into Sojourn Lakeside Resort and other revitalization projects, Janice and Scott have spurred area-wide economic development.

GAYLORD — Girls from around the state made a beeline for the annual Tech Savvy STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) event for teen girls in Gaylord Saturday.

Carrie Miller, a math teacher from Tahquamenon Area Schools in the Upper Peninsula, said the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Gaylord area branch’s Tech Savvy event gives girls unique opportunities to develop connections with women.

She stressed the importance of the fifth-annual event’s full day of workshops for young girls and said Luce County, where her school is located, has very few examples of women with college degrees.

“What I have seen is some students who may have never considered going to college come here and hear that there’s opportunities for them that they didn’t know,” Miller said. “There’s just not opportunities for them to see professional women in our county … They don’t have a lot of positive female role models.”    Continue Reading
