Gaylord — The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Gaylord Area Branch is pleased to announce that RaeAnn Kievit was selected as the recipient of a $750 education award.  This award is given annually to an exceptional young Otsego County woman who plans to continue her education in pursuit of career goals.

GAYLORD — Girls from around the state made a beeline for the annual Tech Savvy STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) event for teen girls in Gaylord Saturday.

Carrie Miller, a math teacher from Tahquamenon Area Schools in the Upper Peninsula, said the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Gaylord area branch’s Tech Savvy event gives girls unique opportunities to develop connections with women.

She stressed the importance of the fifth-annual event’s full day of workshops for young girls and said Luce County, where her school is located, has very few examples of women with college degrees.

“What I have seen is some students who may have never considered going to college come here and hear that there’s opportunities for them that they didn’t know,” Miller said. “There’s just not opportunities for them to see professional women in our county … They don’t have a lot of positive female role models.”    Continue Reading

Gaylord’s Kane awarded AAUW grant

WASHINGTON — The American Association of University Women awarded a 2017-18 Career Development Grant to Jessica Kane of Gaylord.

Kane is pursuing an online master’s degree in geographic information systems and web map programming at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

AAUW Career Development Grants help women advance in their careers. These awards were originally created to offer funding to AAUW members who sought to renew or resume academic work for career or employment advancement.

The grants now assist women who are preparing to advance or change their careers or to re-enter the workforce. One past recipient, for example, used the grant to pursue advanced certification in auto mechanics at a community college, where she helped start a club to support women mechanic students. She’s just one of thousands of AAUW awardees who work to empower women and girls.
